Middle School Education in Geneva CUSD 304
Middle school education changed in Geneva when the voters approved a referendum to create Geneva Middle School. The middle school was originally located at Coultrap Middle School. It was moved from its downtown location to the outskirts of town in 1994, opening as Geneva Middle School with almost 850 students. Over the next twelve years, the school continued to grow past its capacity of 1100 students to over 1400. Therefore, in 2006, Geneva Middle School experienced a second transformation when the school split into North and South campuses, each serving the needs of 720 students. Geneva Middle School South remained in the original building, undergoing extensive renovations during the 2006-07 school year.
Today, GMS-South serves 6th, 7th, and 8th grades, each of which is broken into two teams of around 125 students each. In addition to the core team classes of science, social studies, math, and language arts, students take physical education and exploratory classes such as art, Spanish, German, French, family and consumer science, technology education, art and general music. Also, over two-thirds of the student population participates in GMS-South’s music program, which includes band, choir, and orchestra. Extracurricular activities are also offered and consist of a variety of sports teams, clubs, drama, and intramurals.
The current school improvement plan has goals that are centered on reading, problem solving and creating a caring school environment. The focus of GMS-South is student-centered. Teachers and administrators constantly strive to “do what is best for kids,” and work together to further District 304’s “tradition of excellence.”
