Fundraiser Planned for Geneva High Graduate
January 3, 2010 by Carl H. Martens
A Geneva High School graduate battling leukemia has the support of her alma mater.
The school’s Key Club is sponsoring a fundraiser at Noodles & Company in Geneva Commons from 4 to 9 p.m. Wednesday that will benefit Rachel Pinson, 26.
The restaurant will donate 25 percent of each purchase to her when customers say they are there for Rachel. Both dine-in and carry-out customers can participate, club adviser Kristine Toldness said.
Rachel Pinson’s mother, Mary Pinson, said the support her daughter has received is overwhelming and appreciated.
“People have come out of nowhere,” she said.
Rachel Pinson was diagnosed with leukemia in September and began aggressive treatment at the University of Chicago, including a stem cell transplant from her brother Austin, a senior at Geneva High School, her mother said. She noted he didn’t think twice about the donation.
“He gave her the gift of life,” she said.
Rachel Pinson has a master’s degree in exercise science and works as a certified massage therapist at Massage Envy in Geneva Commons, though she is unable to work until she regains her strength, her mother said.
“She has a very positive attitude and believes in the power of prayer,” Mary Pinson said.
Whatever donations are left once Rachel Pinson is in remission will be donated to a leukemia foundation, her mother said.

Geneva Entrepreneur Thankful for Hometown Heritage

Haastyle, an art business co-run by longtime Geneva resident Nate Winter, is making waves in Chicago with a bold artistic style and a new furniture line.
Chicago Social magazine’s August issue (available at news stands and fine Chicago retailers now) includes a feature article on the company in its “Radar Now!” section. The article explains Haastyle’s signature style of digital collage artwork and announces the launch of its new Furniture Art series.
Winter, who lived in Geneva from 1993 until 2004 during which time he attended Geneva Middle School and Marmion Academy for high school, runs the Chicago-based art business with graphic artist Nick Haas.
Although he now resides in Chicago, Winter’s Geneva roots remain very important to him. “There’s an strong network of Geneva people who continue to be very supportive of the art we’re creating through Haastyle,” says Winter. “Although Geneva is miles away, the bond of growing up there is as strong as ever.”
Geneva opens cooling centers during record heat
June 23, 2009 by Carl H. Martens
Cooling centers are available for Geneva residents today and Wednesday as the heat is projected to reach 100 for two or more consecutive days, officials said.
The combination of high heat and high humidity can be dangerous. Especially at-risk are the elderly, infants and young children, people with disabilities and those taking medications for chronic health conditions.
Cooling centers are located:
- Geneva City Hall, 22 S. St., 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday
- Genva Public Works Facility, 1800 South St., 7 a.m. to 4 p.m.
- Geneva Fire Department Headquarters, 200 East Side Drive, 24 hours, seven days a week
For questions about the cooling centers, call 630-232-7494.
Officials from the city and the Kane County Office of Emergency Management and Health Department recommends the public take additional precautions during periods of extreme heat.
These precautions include:
- Frequent well-being checks on family members and the elderly and at-risk neighbors and relatives
- Drink plenty of fluids. Those with liver or kidney disease should check with their doctors.
- Never leave children or pets alone in a closed vehicle
- Avoid strenuous work during the warmest part of the day.
- Use a buddy system when working in extreme heat and take frequent breaks
- Stay indoors as much as possible
- Stay on the lowest level of your home out of the sun if air conditioning is not availble
- Eat balanced, light meals
- Limit alcohol
- Dress in loose-fitting, lightweight and light-colored clothes
- Protect the face and head with a wide-brimmed hat when out in the sun
Geneva and Batavia to Join Upstate Eight Conference
June 18, 2009 by Carl H. Martens
With their current conference, the Western Sun in shambles, the Batavia and Geneva high school athletic programs look to join the two St. Charles schools in the Upstate Eight Conference (UEC). The schools both need final school board approval which should take place sometime this month, however it is anticipated both will join the Upstate Eight in 2010 after one final season in the Western Sun without any objections.
Current members of the Upstate Eight Conference include:
- Bartlett High School
- East Aurora High School
- Elgin High School
- Lake Park High School
- Larkin High School
- Neuqua Valley High School
- St. Charles East High School
- St. Charles North High School
- South Elgin High School
- Streamwood High School
- Waubonsie Valley High School
Although Batavia and Geneva will be the UEC’s smallest schools, it is expected that they will be able to compete just fine and strengthen the conference as a whole.
Although the details of the additions are still being worked out, the basic plan is to split the UEC into two seven-team divisions based on enrollment. Batavia, Geneva, St. Charles East, St. Charles North, Elgin, Larkin and Streamwood would be in the smaller-school division while Bartlett, Lake Park, South Elgin, East Aurora, Neuqua, Waubonsie and new Metea Valley will compose the large-school division.
Most games played will be intra-divsion with some crossover.
One thing is for sure, fans in the Tri-Cities can expect to witness some great rivalries come the fall of 2010.
Foreclosure Number Takes a Dive in May
June 16, 2009 by Carl H. Martens
The month of may saw a total of 71 homes in the Tri-Cities and surrounding communities enter into foreclosure according to data provided by Realtytrac.com, a foreclosure tracking website.
When compared to the previous month of April that number showed a decline of 51 percent when Realtytrac reported 145 homes moved through the foreclosure process.
The foreclosures in May 2009 represent a year-over-year decline of 26 percent compared to the 96 homes in May 2008.
The reduction in foreclosures is a good thing for homeowners that aren’t in foreclosure or short sale trying to sell their homes because foreclosures and short sales tend to pull down the value of surrounding homes.
This is good news for the area, however it doesn’t mean that we are out of the woods yet.
By the numbers:
Number of foreclosures, Tri-Cities and Elburn, South Elgin, North Aurora, Maple Park, and Sugar Grove.
May 2009: 71
April 2009: 145
May 2008: 96
To learn how you can avoid foreclosure by short selling your home, contact us and one of our local real estate experts will contact you…remember there are alternatives to foreclosures.
